iPhoto

mypublisher

mypublisher offers a neat service. They have a plugin for iPhoto that allows you to order photobooks from them, which are nicer quality and less expensive than ordering directly from Apple. I've used them and have been very happy with the product and price.

They have now instroduced BookMaker for Mac which doens't require iPhoto, so if you aren't an iPhoto user you can now easily use MyPublisher.

Currently there are some discounts for orders, they often have discounts so wait to order something until you get a discount in your email after signing up with them.

Multiple users can access the same iPhoto Library

My wife occasionally uses my Mac and she has her own account/login so when she was logged in under her own account she couldn't access the iPhoto Library setup for use with my account. The iPhoto Library on my account is all our family photos and she wanted quick access to them. I set off to see if it was possible for multiple users on the same Mac to be able to share the same iPhoto Library from both of our accounts. After a little digging I found that it is actually pretty easy to do. This works on OS X 10.4+, if you're on an older system search elsewhere for a solution.

1) Enable ACL:
From a terminal session enter: sudo fsaclctl -p / -e

2) Create a new folder which will contain the shared iPhoto Library, I suggest: /Users/Shared/iPhoto Library
(You must create a new folder and not move or copy an existing folder.)

3) Add an ACL rule for each user who you want to be able to access the iPhoto Library:
From a terminal session enter the command below replacing USERNAME with the User's short name which you can find in the Accounts section of System Preferences.

(The command below is all one line, no spaces after the commas at the end of the first two lines.)

sudo chmod +a "USERNAME allow delete, chown, list,
search,add_file,add_subdirectory,delete_child,file_inherit,
directory_inherit" /Users/Shared/iPhoto\ Library

4) Now the iPhoto Library folder you created is ready to go, you can start using it by creating a new library in that location, or you can bring over an existing iPhoto Library.

images iphoto

NOTE: If you want to use an existing iPhoto Library, you must COPY it into the new shared iPhoto Library which you created, if you MOVE the files, it will not work. Copy and Paste, or Option+Drag/Drop to copy.

NOTE: If you hold down the OPTION key on your keyboard while launching iPhoto it will prompt you to select the iPhoto Library to use. After I copied my old iPhoto Library contents to my new shared iPhoto Library I was able to access the same iPhoto Library from both my account, and my wife's account.

Sony ImageStation Price update

By the way, it seems the $0.10 price on 4x6 prints was a sale, the normal price is $0.12 per print - still a great deal.

Cheers,

Sony's Imagestation, an alternative photo order option in iPhoto

Order prints through iPhoto at Sony's ImageStation for only $0.10 per 4x6 print.

I prefer to just show pictures online, but my wife prefers to print them out and put them into photo books. So we do both. I'd been printing digital photos at Costco for several years. The prices were always very good, the quality was also very good, and for me it was convenient - especially once you could upload pictures from your computer. But since switching back to a Mac, Costco isn't quite as convenient for me now because they only support multiple file uploads on a PC. I would select the photos I wanted printed in iPhoto, then export them to a folder on my Media Center Edition Windows XP machine, remote desktop to it, and upload and order from Costco from that computer. Not ideal, but it works without too much trouble.

My search for a new photo printing service started out looking for a company that could print the date of the picture was taken from the EXIF data, but I found non (in the competitive price arena - let me know if you know of somebody that does this.) And in my searching I ran across Sony's ImageStation photo printing service.

Sony ImageStation has two methods of uploading multiple files, the first is a web browser plugin (that I never could get working on Camino or Safari) but fortunately the second method is an iPhoto plugin! The way it works is this: You select the photos you want to print in iPhoto, then instead of selecting ORDER PRINTS to order from Apple/Kodak - you select File | Export and select ImageStation. The files upload to your account, and when the upload is completed you are taken to your account in a browser where you can place your order. The online ordering process is very similar to Costco's - it's easy to use, and of course the $0.10 cost per 4x6 print is awesome.

FWIW - enlargements are far cheaper at Costco than other places, so I'll still go through Costco for enlargements, but after I receive my 400 some odd print order I just placed at Sony's ImageStation, if the quality is good then I'll keep ording 4x6's from Sony.

iPhoto Buddy helps you manage multiple libraries

iPhoto only allows you to have a single library of photos on your Mac. With iPhoto Buddy you can easily manage multiple libraries.

I use it myself and it works great. Freeware, donations happily accepted.

iPhotoBuddy

Here's the official blurb:

With iPhoto Buddy, you can easily manage an entire list of iPhoto Libraries, enabling you to quickly and easily open the Library of your choice for viewing/editing/printing in iPhoto. You can easily switch between your multiple Libraries, and iPhoto Buddy will automatically quit iPhoto and instantly re-launch it with the newly selected Library. There is no limit to the number of Libraries, and they can be located in various locations--even on removable or network volumes. Each Library can be assigned its own name that differs from its folder name in the Finder; each Library can be assigned a thumbnail image that can help to remind you of its contents; and each Library can be password protected for privacy/security.iPhoto Buddy also displays various details about your Libraries without launching iPhoto. Information like each Library's size and image count as well as a complete listing of the Albums, Smart Albums, Folders, Books, Slide Shows, etc. contained therein. And in keeping with the enhanced integration of the iApps that Apple introduced with the original iLife package, iPhoto Buddy also allows you to open iMovie, iDVD, and iWeb using any of your iPhoto Libraries for importing photos into your Movies, DVDs and websites. In fact with iPhoto Buddy, any application that contains a Media Browser for accessing your iPhoto Library, can used with ANY of your iPhoto Libraries.

WebExport, an update to 'Create cool Java Slideshows out of iPhoto'

Not long ago I blogged about a couple easy ways to create cool Java slideshows from iPhoto. One solution uses a small applet which accesses your iPhoto photos to create the slideshows. CustomHTMLExport, however, was a slicker design in that it creates the slideshows from within iPhoto. This is nice because you can select specific photos to be included in the slideshow, with the external solution you pretty much have to select an album.

CustomHTMLExport has been shelved, and Dan has done some great work in upgrading it to the new version, WebExport.

In less than 5 minutes I downloaded WebExport, installed it (with a new install, previously you had to copy files to the correct location), I installed the included sample templates (also now automated for ease), and from within iPhoto selected some photos of my recent trip to Cannon Beach, and created a slideshow using AirTight's Simpleviewer.

Here is the link to the slideshow I just created (you can use the right and left arrows to navigate through the photos, or click on the thumbnails.) I ran with the stock settings but you can easily customize, add comments, etc.

This is a really slick way to create nice java slideshows from within iPhoto. I hope Dan or somebody else puts together a template for AirTight's AutoViewer. Winking

Another Google / iPhoto Utilities: Export from iPhoto to Google Earth

iPhotoToGoogleEarth is a utility from Stanton Software, freeware, donations happily accepted.

iPhotoToGoogleEarth GoogleEarth

From Craig's website: iPhotoToGoogleEarth is a plugin for iPhoto 6 that will export photos for viewing in Google Earth. To make the most of iPhotoToGoogleEarth you'll need to have GPS infomation stored in the Exif tags. If you don't know what that means this plugin probably isn't for you.

The best GPS tagger out there is GPSPhotoLinker, check it out. Once you have photos tagged correctly, select your images in iPhoto and then Export. If you have a track log (in NMEA format) you can include it with the images and configure the line thickness and colour. If the track is very long you may wish to lower the detail (it skips points) so that Google Earth runs smoothly, this will depend on how fast your computer is.

The file it produces is a KMZ. Open it with Google Earth or share it with friends to show off where you have been.

Create cool Java SlideShows out of iPhoto

NOTE: There is an update to this post, please see the new post for futher details. New Post.

Please note that CustomHTMLExport has been replaced with WebExport, and it's much improved!

Airtight's SimpleViewer and AutoViewer are two slick Java slideshows.

Here are two ways that you can create slideshows from iPhoto without having to have any other Dreamwork type applications.

iPhoto Mac Universal Binary

iPhoto Export from Haugus.net is a free standing application which reads pictures from iPhoto. It has had many revisions and is very stable with good features.

CustomHTMLExport is a plugin for iPhoto, so you export right from iPhoto. This is newer and will probably have a few revisions before it's as easy to use as Haugus.net's slideshow tool. CustomHTMLExport has the nice feature of being built right into iPhoto.

Check them out and get cracking on some great slideshows.
